Breastfeeding, Chestfeeding, and Lactation Friendly New York

BFFNY

Through a grant hosted by Oswego County Opportunities, we are excited to bring the Breastfeeding, Chestfeeding, and Lactation Friendly NY (BFFNY) program to Cayuga County. Through this program, we can assist businesses and organizations within our county in creating private breastfeeding/chestfeeding/pumping space(s) for employees, clients, and patrons. Increasing the number of these spaces and their accessibility to nursing and pumping parents, we can support them on their parenting journeys. We can also help to draft breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and pumping friendly policies for your business or organization.

For breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and pumping families, we can provide support with access to resources regarding current New York State law on the rights of employees to express breastmilk at work. Our Community Health Workers (CHWs) are also able to connect families with local Certified Lactation Consultants (CLCs) for help with their breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and pumping journeys. Furthermore, our CHWs are able to create local support groups.

Lactation Rooms

Creating a Supportive Lactation Room

In creating a supportive lactation space within your workplace, there are only a few things you need:

  • A private space (small room, privacy screen, or pod)

  • Access to an electrical outlet

  • A comfy and supportive chair

  • A refridgerator dedicated to the storage of breastmilk

Additional Things to Consider

Once the needs above are met, you may want to consider adding in a few items of comfort:

  • Snacks that promote breastmilk production

  • Water for hydration

  • Milk storage bags

  • Calm, relaxing environment (soft lighting/low music)

  • Sign for the door asking for undisturbed privacy
